Egg Freezing Gains Popularity in India: Dr. S. Vyjayanthi on the Future of Fertility Preservation

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], September 25:  Fertility preservation is no longer a subject confined to medical textbooks and oncology wards—it is now part of mainstream conversations among India’s urban, career-driven women. One procedure leading this change is egg freezing, and guiding this shift with expertise and compassion is Dr S. Vyjayanthi, Director of MotherToBe Fertility Centre and Head of the Fertility Department at KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad.

The Changing Face of Fertility Choices

Traditionally, fertility treatments were sought only when couples encountered challenges conceiving. But today, women in their late 20s and early 30s are taking a proactive step by choosing to freeze their eggs. According to Dr Vyjayanthi, this marks a new era in reproductive health.

“Egg freezing is not only for women undergoing cancer treatment or medical conditions that threaten fertility,” she explains. “We are seeing a growing number of professionals—lawyers, IT specialists, entrepreneurs—choosing social egg freezing to protect their fertility while pursuing their careers and personal goals.”

    Why Timing Matters

Dr Vyjayanthi stresses that age remains the single most critical factor in fertility. Women are born with a limited number of eggs, and both the quality and quantity decline over time.

“Freezing eggs at a younger age—ideally before 35—significantly increases the chances of achieving a successful pregnancy later in life,” she says. “It’s about empowering women to plan motherhood on their terms, without feeling rushed by their biological clock.”

    The Science Behind Egg Freezing

The procedure itself is a blend of science and precision. It begins with controlled ovarian stimulation, followed by egg retrieval. These eggs are then preserved through vitrification, a rapid freezing method that prevents ice crystal formation and maintains egg quality.

When the woman is ready for pregnancy, the eggs can be thawed, fertilised through IVF, and transferred as embryos. “The technology is highly advanced and safe,” Dr Vyjayanthi reassures. “We have seen remarkable results for patients who return years later to use their frozen eggs.”

    Emotional Freedom and Empowerment

Beyond the science, Dr. Vyjayanthi highlights the psychological benefits. For many women, egg freezing brings a sense of control and peace of mind.

“It gives women breathing space,” she notes. “They can focus on their education, career, or finding the right life partner, without the constant anxiety of running out of time. For patients, this relief itself is life-changing.”

    Rising Awareness in India

Urban centers like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai are witnessing an uptick in women seeking consultations on egg freezing. Alongside career-oriented women, patients with conditions like premature ovarian insufficiency, endometriosis, or those undergoing cancer therapies are also considering fertility preservation.

At MotherToBe Fertility Centre, the demand has steadily grown. “Our approach is to provide advanced treatment backed by ethical practices and thorough counselling,” Dr Vyjayanthi emphasises. “Every woman deserves to make an informed choice about her fertility.”

Looking Ahead: A New Chapter in Reproductive Health

Experts believe that fertility preservation will play a transformative role in reproductive planning in India over the coming decade. As awareness spreads and societal attitudes shift, egg freezing is likely to become as normalized as other preventive healthcare measures.

For Dr. Vyjayanthi, the mission is clear: “Fertility preservation is not about delaying motherhood indefinitely. It’s about giving women the right to choose—on their terms, with the best chances possible. That, to me, is the true revolution in fertility care.”
