HDFC ERGO Car Insurance Checklist Before Buying a Second-Hand Car

New Delhi [India], September 21: Buying a second-hand car can be a smart way to get the model you want at a more manageable price. But before completing the purchase, insurance deserves the same attention as the vehicle’s condition, service history and documents.

HDFC ERGO believes buyers should check the existing policy early, understand what it covers and know what needs to be updated after ownership changes. A simple car insurance checklist can make this process easier and help buyers move ahead with significant confidence.

Start With the Existing Policy Status

Before agreeing to the purchase, the buyer should first confirm whether the vehicle has an active car insurance policy. The policy document should match the car’s registration number, model, variant and other key details.

It is also important to check the policy start and expiry dates and verify the name of the current policyholder. This first check helps establish whether the car is currently insured and whether any immediate action may be required after purchase.

Know What Type of Cover Comes with the Car

The next step is to understand whether the vehicle carries only third-party insurance or a comprehensive policy. The distinction matters because third-party cover mainly deals with legal liabilities towards others, while comprehensive cover may also protect against eligible own-damage events, subject to policy terms.

Buyers should not assume that an existing policy automatically offers wider protection. Knowing the exact cover can help them decide whether the current policy is sufficient for their needs.

Confirm How the Policy Will Be Transferred

Insurance transfer is an important part of changing vehicle ownership. Once the car is sold, the policy details also need to reflect the new owner. Buyers should understand what documents are required, how soon the transfer should be completed and whether any inspection is needed.

HDFC ERGO car insurance customers can review the applicable transfer process and policy conditions so the insurance record is updated along with the vehicle ownership documents.

Review the IDV Before You Take Over the Policy

The insured declared value, or IDV, deserves attention when a comprehensive policy is involved. It represents the value considered for certain total-loss or theft claims, subject to policy terms.

For a second-hand car, buyers should check whether the IDV appears reasonable for the vehicle’s age, condition and current market position. A value that seems unusually high or low may affect both the premium and the financial outcome in specific claim situations.

    Look Closely at Existing Add-ons

Optional add-ons can make a policy more useful, but their relevance may change as the car gets older. A used vehicle may already have benefits such as zero depreciation, roadside assistance or engine protection.

Buyers should check which add-ons are currently included, whether they remain available after transfer and whether they suit the car’s age and usage. This can prevent unnecessary spending while also revealing where additional protection may be useful.

Ask About the Car’s Claim History

Previous insurance claims can offer useful context about the vehicle. Buyers should ask whether the car has been involved in major accidents, whether expensive parts were replaced and whether any claim is still pending.

A previous claim does not automatically make the car a poor choice, but it can encourage a closer inspection of repair quality and replaced components. Claim history can therefore support a more informed purchase decision alongside the usual mechanical checks.

Understand the No Claim Bonus Position

No-claim bonus is linked to the policyholder and does not simply move to the buyer with the vehicle. This means the premium visible under the seller’s policy may not remain the same after ownership transfer. Buyers should account for this while estimating future insurance costs.

HDFC ERGO advises checking the applicable premium structure and policy terms after the transfer so there are no surprises when the policy is updated or renewed.

Plan for Renewal Before the Current Policy Ends

A valid policy today does not mean the same cover will remain suitable at renewal. Buyers should use the transfer period to compare coverage, deductibles, add-ons, IDV, garage access and premium options for the next policy term.

This makes insurance part of the ownership plan rather than an afterthought. For anyone buying a second-hand car, the right checklist is not only about paperwork. It is about knowing what cover exists, what needs to change and what the car may cost to insure going forward.
